What are PEGI Ratings?

Age ratings are a way to ensure that the entertainment contents like DVDs, Films and Games are clearly marked for the minimum permissible age group which is suitable. PEGI stands for Pan European Game Information. Thus, PEGI age ratings offer a guidance to the parents/viewers to help them in making a judgement whether the desired product is suitable for their kids or for viewing themselves. The PEGI Age ratings was introduced on 9th April 2003 and since 2012 and is the only way in the UK for video games.

What are PEGI Ratings for Games?

When it comes to the games, the PEGI Age ratings has been the only way to the viewers discretion and PEGI 12, PEGI 16 and PEGI 18 are the ones which are the legally binding aspects. The games falling under these categories cannot be supplied to people under the age limit. The UK PEGI ratings is being applied by the organization called ‘VSC Rating Board’.

PEGI 3The games with a PEGI 3 rating are considered suitable for all age groups. The games which have been labelled as PEGI 3 contains no sounds and pictures which may frighten young children. Even the violence is in the form of the comical or childlike setting violence. The games with PEGI 3 Ratings contain no bad language. Example: Super Mario Maker 2
PEGI 7The games with PEGI 7 Ratings contain some scenes and sounds that may frighten young kids. Such games contain very mild forms of violence, however the violence is implied, non-detailed, or non-realistic violence. Example: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated
PEGI 12The games with PEGI 12 Ratings contains violence of a slightly more graphic nature towards fantasy characters. Such games show non-realistic violence towards human-like characters. The games under PEGI 12 Ratings are Sexual innuendo or sexual posturing, and any mild bad language can be also be present. The games under PEGI 12 can also contains gambling which is now a normal real life things and casinos and gambling halls can also be present. Example: Street Fighter 6
PEGI 16The video games with PEGI 16 ratings are the ones which contains violence (or sexual activity) which looks very realistic as that of real life. The PEGI Ratings of 16 games may contains bad language which can be extreme in nature and such games can also feature the use of tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs. Example: Halo Infinite
PEGI 18The PEGI 18 Ratings Games are the ones which contains gross violence, motiveless killings and violence towards defenseless characters. The games under this category also features the glamorization of the use of illegal drugs and explicit sexual activity. Example: Mortal Kombat 11
Apart from the above-mentioned PEGI Ratings, the PEGI also operates a special rating represented by an exclamation point labelled “Parental Guidance Recommended.” The programs with such PEGI Ratings is available for all ages, but parents guidance is necessary for such games. Examples include Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. These do not apply to dating sites (e.g. Tinder), where the PEGI 18 rating is used. Example: EPIX
